A Memorable Educational Trip

Published on: 21 April 2025

It’s important to remember where we come from and to celebrate the people and stories that shaped our country. Well then Interact had the chance to learn more about our heritage, our leaders, and the value of communication in all its forms during a meaningful trip to OR Tambo

On the 12th of April 2025, a group of enthusiastic Interact learners embarked on a memorable and educational trip. The day began with the group boarding a bus and heading off to their destination, OR Tambo.

Upon arrival at OR Tambo, the group took a walk around the area while waiting for the children to arrive. Once everyone was gathered, they moved into a classroom where the learning truly began. The group was introduced to sign language, learning how to communicate the letters of the alphabet (A–Z), the months of the year (January to December), numbers, and even how to sign their own names. This eye-opening experience deepened their understanding of non-verbal communication and inclusivity. The session also included poetry and reading activities, which sparked creativity and appreciation for expression through both words and signs.

Later, they were taken on a tour around the site. The guide explained various works of art, and the group got to admire sculptures, paintings, and historic photographs of South Africa’s freedom fighters. They also explored old musical instruments like pianos and fascinating devices such as talking machines that offered a glimpse into the past.

In the spirit of giving and education, the learners also donated books, a thoughtful gesture that will continue to benefit others long after the trip ended.

After the tour, the group took a well-deserved break and were served lunch. The day continued with joyful moments, they sang songs together, sang the national anthem proudly, took pictures to capture the memories and eventually wrapped up the day.

Reflecting on the experience, one of the Interact learners shared, "I enjoyed it very much and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience." That heartfelt statement sums up the spirit of the day. A perfect blend of learning, culture, inspiration, and connection.

This educational excursion was not just a break from the classroom, it was a day filled with history, language, unity, and generosity. The learners left with broadened minds, proud hearts, and lasting memories.
